The Advantages of CNC Milling

The CNC milling process works by the machine reading its instructions from a design that was inputted on a CAD program, and then putting them into operation. Do you know the advantages of it and what it used to do?

The Application of CVC Milling

CNC Milling can produce high and low volumes of highly complex and intricate parts using subtractive machining technology. Material is removed from a blank workpiece and the milling machine uses a rotating cylindrical tool called a milling cutter. Depending on the type of milling machine being used, the machine is able to cut in different angles and move along different axes. The final part will have first been designed via CAD, or Computer-Aided Design, before being inputted into the milling machine for final production.

Advantages of CNC Milling process

High Quality and Precision is Guaranteed

The very nature of CNC Machining as a process leaves very little room for error and high levels of accuracy and precision. This is because it operates from a computer led program, inputting 3D designs that have been developed via CAD (Computer-Aided Design). All operations are launched via a machine interface.

The machine executes these instructions without the need for manual input. These automated processes allow for ultimate precision to ensure even the most finite and complex geometry can be technically managed.

Less Labour Intensive Process

Using a CNC Milling Machine significantly reduces the amount of labour involved in the production process. At full capacity, the tools used in a CNC Milling machine can spin at thousands of RPM (revolutions per minute), resulting in high production output, while also being a time-saving expense. No manual processes could achieve a similar output. It’s worth noting that the simpler the design is, the less human intervention is needed. For example, if there was a complicated design that required the blank to be moved in the process, this would involve machinists to ensure the process was completed safely and securely.

Productivity

Because you can programme a CNC mill or other machine to perform a complex series of actions, you can often step away while the machine gets to work. This can include out-of-hours automated machining in certain set-ups, hugely increasing your productivity and rate of output. This is particularly true for precision engineers operating several CNC centres such as Oracle Precision.

Cost Effectiveness

CNC machines more than make up for their initial costs with a high rate of output and lower number of mistakes in resulting components. Operators also require less training to operate a CNC machine and can learn how to use the machine in a virtual environment, eliminating the need for training workpieces. As these machines become more popular and widespread, their cost will continue to drop.

Safety

Any hazardous safety issues, such as a jam or other machining error, is only detrimental to the machine and not a safety issue for the operator, unlike conventional open guard machining.

Versatility

CNC machines can be reprogrammed in a short period of time to produce a completely new product, making them ideal for short or long production runs. You can change programming without it being time-consuming or too costly.
